ILLUMINATIONS

150 years of string music

SATURDAY, JULY 1 2023 - 20.30

Xavier Phillips, cello
Quatuor Dutilleux

A 19th century string quartet, a 20th century string quintet, a contemporary string quartet: the Dutilleux Quartet and Xavier Phillips invite us to explore one hundred and fifty years of string music. Rita Strohl wrote her Quatuor in 1885, when she was only twenty years old, in a style that was still largely romantic. Fifty years later, in 1936, modernity had burst into Europe – Maria Bach’s String Quintet, with its bolder harmonies, ends with a “Sacred Dance” that seems inspired by tribal rhythms. With the world premiere of Claire-Mélanie Sinnhuber’s second string quartet, the Festival Un Temps pour Elles and Proquartet Centre Européen de Musique de Chambre highlight the language of a contemporary composer.

XAVIER PHILLIPS

Xavier Phillips began playing the cello at the age of 6. When he entered the CNSM in Paris, in Philippe Muller’s class, he was only 15 years old! He obtained his diploma in 1989. In the meantime, he was awarded in prestigious international competitions: Musical Youth of Belgrade, Tchaikovsky Competition of Moscow, Helsinki Competition. Finally, he won a 3rd prize at the Rostropovitch Competition and was noticed by the great Russian master who completed his musical training. Rostropovitch would then regularly invite him to play as a soloist under his direction. During his career, Xavier Phillips has performed with the greatest orchestras, such as the Orchestre National and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the Orchestre de Paris, de la Suisse Romande and de La Scala, under the baton of conductors such as Kurt Masur, Riccardo Muti and Marek Janowski. He performs in chamber music with Vanessa Wagner, Régis Pasquier or Schlomo Mintz. The recording repertoire of Xavier Phillips is very eclectic. He has recorded a disc dedicated to Ravel with his brother, the violinist Jean-Marc Phillips-Varjabedian and the pianist Emmanuel Strosser, but also Kodaly, Shostakovich, contemporary music, and Armenian music.
In addition to his solo activities, Xavier Phillips has been a professor at the Haute Ecole de Musique de Sion, Lausanne site, since 2013. His instrument is a Matteo Gofriller from 1710.

Quatuor Dutilleux

QUATUOR DUTILLEUX

Although most string quartets are formed during musical studies, some musicians wait until they reach artistic maturity before tackling the genre, and it is this fully assumed desire that led to the formation of the Quatuor Dutilleux.
Eclectic musicians, sought-after chamber musicians and members of prestigious orchestras, these four musicians could have continued to work in their respective worlds, but they felt the intimate need to share a common adventure, that of the string quartet. The world of Henri Dutilleux was then naturally invited into their artistic project. A refined world, of memory and invention, in which a great freedom is expressed. The quartet recognizes itself in this world and humbly takes the name of the master.
Guillaume Chilemme, Matthieu Handtschoewercker, David Gaillard and Thomas Duran then imagined for their quartet a mosaic whose tesserae would take the form of works from the great repertoire past or present, original creations drawing on their writing talents, encounters with musicians or singers from different worlds or even with talented young musicians at the dawn of their careers…
The Quatuor Dutilleux was inspired by a decisive encounter with the conductor Emmanuel Krivine, and was invited by France-Musique before being revealed to the general public by the Prades Festival, where it was invited back in 2022. The quartet affirms its link with Henri Dutilleux and his music by performing for the inauguration of the Maison Joy-Dutilleux in 2021. In parallel, the quartet is developing a residency in the city of Toulouse and its Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional for the 2022 season, which allows it to strongly embody its will to transmit its music. Since its creation, the Quatuor Dutilleux has been solicited for collaborations by numerous artists, including Noëmi Waysfeld, Marie Chilemme, Bruno Delepelaire, and Philippe Berrod. In 2023/2024, the quartet will perform in the auditorium of the Musée d’Orsay for a concert in connection with the Van Gogh exhibition and the tenth anniversary of Henri Dutilleux’s death.
