CHANTS DE LUMIERES

Luminous variations from dusk till dawn

SUNDAY, JULY 2 2023 - 17.00

Marielou Jacquard, mezzo-soprano
Anastasie Lefebvre de Rieux, flute
Constance Luzzati, harp

The “fiery skies” (“cieux embrasés”) of Baudelaire’s poem, borrowed by Edith Lejet in her eponymous piece, evoke a tipping point that poets and composers delight in: Hedwige Chrétien’s “Rêveries d’aïeules” pays tribute to elders in the twilight of their existence, Edith Canat de Chizy’s “Litanie” takes us from the living to the dead, and Hedwige Chrétien’s “Pour ceux qui aiment” awakens us to love, tinged with light-toned suns. In Rosy Wertheim’s “Pour ceux qui aiment”, these half-toned lights awaken the senses and take on the allure of seduction. The night is sometimes dark and nightmarish, consuming the poet in Grace Williams’ Songs of Sleep, but from its darkness stand out the twinkling stars of Gourand Gentil or Ferrari. Birds, harbingers of both night (“Le Roussignolet” by Pauline Viardot) and day, accompany these luminous crossings.
