ABBAYE DE ROYAUMONT

Crepuscular

SATURDAY JUNE 15TH 2024 - 4:00PM

Vanessa Wagner, piano

A dreamy nocturnal program, imagined by pianist Vanessa Wagner around the minimalist music of six contemporary female composers.

“Go as far as you can in your dream and find your own voice. Let your voice be your guide”, said composer and performer Meredith Monk in 2022. These six contemporary composers, from the legendary Meredith Monk, born in 1942, to French star Camille Pépin, born in 1991, explore the world of dreams. The night begins with Crepuscular, a piece with dark accents and impenetrable harmonies by South African Amy Crankshaw, and continues with Gotham City, originally written for piano and voice, an “old lullaby” that Monk sang on stage herself. Then come the “mauve hues, evocative of daybreak” of Number One, a piece by Camille Pépin that depicts dawn in an explosion of color. Repetitive, cyclical, poetic, minimalist music elicits meditation. Is this what makes it so immediately accessible? From Gotham City, covered by Björk, to the music of Caroline Shaw, popularized by the Mozart in the Jungle series.

VANESSA WAGNER

Described by the daily newspaper Le Monde as “the most delightfully singular pianist of her generation”, Vanessa Wagner pursues a career that reflects her image, original and committed, combining classical recitals, contemporary creation, playing period instruments, chamber music and cross-disciplinary encounters with other artistic practices. In recent years, she has collaborated with artists such as Murcof and Rone, Yoann Bourgeois, Arthur H, Romane Bohringer, Marianne Denicourt, Emmanuelle Vo-Dinh, Sylvain Groud and Petter Jacobson. Highly committed to the music of her time, she is the dedicatee of several pieces by Pascal Dusapin, François Meimoun, Amy Crankshaw, Alex Nante, etc. With pianist Wilhem Latchoumia, she recorded “This is América” (2021), devoted to the great American repertoire for two pianos (Diapason d’Or, choc de Classica). Wishing to continue her exploration of the post-minimal repertoire, she recorded ‘The Study of the Invisible’ (March 2022) and then ‘Mirrored’ (2022). Vanessa Wagner was named “Instrumental Soloist of the Year” at the 1999 Victoires de la Musique Classique awards, and since then she has performed all over the world, with a career that has gone from strength to strength over the last 20 years. She is the guest of numerous orchestras and regularly performs in the most prestigious venues and festivals. Vanessa Wagner has been artistic director of the Festival de Chambord since 2010, where she has developed an ambitious and eclectic programme, and in 2020 created the Festival de Giverny. She was awarded the Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur medal in April 2023.
