RECORDING
WOMEN COMPOSERS
Created in 2022, the record label La Boîte à Pépites carries on the association’s mission with a new objective: to publish monographic albums. Each project focuses on a single female composer and brings together a collective of prestigious musicians. By including illustrated and documented booklets, and entrusting the recording to today’s greatest musicians, the label offers reference versions of works that have never been recorded before.
RITA STROHL
A COMPOSER OF IMMENSITY
“Mrs. Strohl is a composer of genius who particularly excels in setting the loveliest poems to music.”
(La Nation, February 26th, 1903)
Rita Strohl is an atypical figure in the history of music. Attracted to both the Wagnerian universe and symbolism, she composed works of chamber music as well as grand lyrical and symphonic soundscapes. This double CD containing performances by exceptional artists is the first part of a three-part project dedicated to the music of Rita Strohl. It is entirely devoted to her songs, most of which were previously unrecorded.

“Mrs. Strohl, whose marvelous talent as a composer reveals itself to be surer and more powerful every day, is undoubtedly called to a luminous destiny.”
(Edouard Moullé, Revue éolienne, February 1900)
From 1884 to 1903, Rita Strohl composed numerous chamber works, most of them deeply romantic, imbued, in her own words, with a “devoutly conservative and colorful spirit”. This triple CD contains performances by a group of sixteen prestigious musicians. The second volume of a projected three-volume collection of the works of Rita Strohl, it is devoted to her chamber music, almost none of which had ever been recorded.

Musiques sur l’eau
“She gave language to the most sublime abstractions, clad water and fire in orchestral flesh, and suggested through sound the motions of atoms and sap.”
(Carlos Larronde, Le Soir, March 6th, 1931)
With Les Cygnes [The Swans] and the Symphonie de la Forêt [Forest Symphony], Rita Strohl sought a form of communion with nature, a decisive turning point towards a musical style that became increasingly symbolist and spiritual, which subsequently led her to compose grand lyrical and mystical works such as Yajnavalkya.

JEANNE LELEU
A DAZZLING TRIUMPH
“Grand Prix de Rome for composition in 1923, Jeanne Leleu deserves a dazzling triumph that any other country apart from ours would have already brilliantly accorded her.”
(Le Monde, April 30th, 1947)
A child prodigy and virtuoso at the piano, Jeanne Leleu was chosen to premiere Ravel’s famous piece “Ma mère l’Oye” at the age of eleven. A brilliant composer, she wrote many masterpieces, songs, chamber music, ballets and symphonic works. Her pieces were performed at the Paris Opera and by the most important orchestras of her time, and she was unanimously acclaimed by her peers and by the critics. This first volume, devoted to her youthful works, will allow listeners to rediscover a major, unjustly forgotten figure in 20th century music.

CHARLOTTE SOHY
COMPOSITRICE DE LA BELLE ÉPOQUE
« February 17th. A Friday musicale. Mrs. Labey has played her music for us. It is quite good. Messager is taking an interest. »
(Marguerite de Saint-Marceaux, Diary, 1922)
Charlotte Sohy brought to life thirty-five compositions for every kind of musical formation, of which fifteen, previously unrecorded, are in this album. The record label la Boîte à Pépites dedicated its first monographic album to her. Its aim is to bring to light a plethora of forgotten works by women composers.
